Short and Sweet Malaysia

I seem to be always in a hurry to catch up time lost sorting out visa's or staying in a particular place too long, and the coming month will be no exception. I have to be at a certain border crossing on 7 May, no ifs, no buts, no maybes, so my time in Malaysia has been shortened significantly. Back on the road I head straight from Johor Bahru to Kuantan for a one night stay, a mid afternoon arrival provides me with enough time for a walk along the water front, the town centre and a visit to one of the East coast's most impressive mosques, Masjid Negeri, a second visit during the evening to see the mosque with it's lit turrets was well worth the walk.

The following morning I'm back on the bike and heading to the Cameron Highlands, though not before the six lane highways and flyovers skirting Kuala Lumpur allow me vista's of the cyber city's Petronas Towers, saving me the nightmare of negotiating traffic to get a close up look. Tana Rata is my day's destination, nestled in the cool climate of the Cameron Highlands, it provides a welcome relief from the constant tropical heat.

Relief from the heat is short lived, and after a chilly 17.5 degree morning ride down from Tana Rata it soon heats up as I ride across the recently opened 18 kilometre or so long Southern bridge that provides easy access to Georgetown, Pulau Pinang. I spend the afternoon walking past Chinese shop houses, temples and British Raj-era architecture in the colonial "old town".

So, after a short and sweet ride through Malaysia I ride off Pulau Pinang via the 16 kilometre or so long Northern bridge and continue North to cross the border into Thailand.
